COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Barton men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed this past weekend at the 2023 Carolina Challenge on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
Barton senior
Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.), the reigning Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, established a pair of school records in the men's one-mile (4:23.12) and 5,000-meter (15:35.66) runs, respectively.
Owens finished runner-up in the 5K and took fourth overall in the one-mile afternoon run while sophomore
Justin Marshall (Nashville, N.C.) placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:55.79 as well for Barton.
In addition, juniors
Amando Robles (Wilson, N.C.) and
Guy Crane (Goldsboro, N.C.) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the men's one-mile morning run for the Bulldogs. Robles finished in 4:44.15 while Crane crossed the line in 4:44.62.
Finally, Barton senior
Quante Downey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) finished 11th in the men's pole vault (12'2").
On the women's side, the Bulldogs had a pair of top-12 finishes in the one-mile morning run. Barton freshman
Cassandra Schrubb (Piqua, Ohio) and senior
Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.) placed 11th and 12th overall, respectively. Schrubb clocked in at 5:31.49 while Russell ran the mile in 5:35.10.
The Barton indoor track and field teams will next compete at the Liberty Open on Saturday, February 4, on the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
