Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Barton women’s soccer holds off Southern Wesleyan, 2-1, for league victory

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (2-3, 2-1) held on to beat Southern Wesleyan (1-5-1, 0-3-1), 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas match at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.

The Bulldogs' junior forward Lexis Goldberg (Sanford, N.C.) broke a one-all tie with the match-winner with just over five minutes left before halftime.  Goldberg received a pass down the right side from sophomore midfielder Emely Pichardo (Reading, Pa.), who was credited with the assist.

Barton opened the scoring with an own goal at the 9:44 mark of the first half while Southern Wesleyan tied the contest with just over four minutes later when Karla Gordon (Lexington, S.C.) finished off a shot after a couple of dribbles at the top of the box for her team-leading fifth score of the year.

Neither team found the back of the net after halftime while the Bulldogs held a 17-11 advantage in shots taken and senior Rachel Cox (Wilson, N.C.) earned the victory in goal after being credited with one save.  Southern Wesleyan's goalkeeper, Katelyn O'Neill (Hendersonville, Tenn.), suffered the setback despite stopping five shots.

Barton hits the road again to take on Erskine next Saturday, September 24, at 2:00 p.m., in Due West, S.C., in a league match while Southern Wesleyan faces Converse in Spartanburg, S.C., on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
