WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (2-4, 1-1) picked up its first Conference Carolinas victory of the 2022 season with a 1-0 triumph over Belmont Abbey (1-4-2, 0-1-2) Wednesday evening at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
Barton sophomore forward
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) scored his team-leading third goal of the year at the 86:37 mark of the second half which proved to be the match-winner.
Lopes scored in the box after his own saved shot deflected to freshman midfielder
Eric Chavez (Fayetteville, N.C.), who was credited with the assist. Barton held a 13-9 edge in shots taken in snapping a three-match losing streak in the process.
Barton freshman goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) earned his first shutout of the season after stopping three shots while Will Whitman (Greensboro, N.C.) suffered the loss in goal for the visitors despite allowing just one goal and making two saves.
Barton will look to keep the momentum going Saturday when the Bulldogs host Southern Wesleyan in a league contest beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Belmont Abbey returns home to take on Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday night beginning at 7:00 p.m.
