SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (1-4, 0-1) suffered a 3-1 setback to Converse (3-1, 1-0) in the Conference Carolinas opener Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium and Hayden Abney Fulp Field.
The Valkyries' Sergi Quixal (Vinaros, SPAIN) and Kyle Lewis (St. James, BARBADOS) both scored second-half goals and assisted on the match-winner as the home team won their second straight contest.
Quixal and Lewis set up the game-winner at the 38:32 mark of the first half when Hayden Gensler (Cleveland, Ga.) found the back of the net in the lower right corner, his team-leading second goal of the year. Converse held a 12-9 edge in shots taken while David Windmiller (Sautee, Ga.) earned the victory in goal after stopping eight shots.
Barton's lone score of the contest came just under five minutes to go courtesy of sophomore forward
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Charlotte, N.C.), his second goal of the season as well. Graduate student
Peer Brendler (Gifhorn, GERMANY) was credited with the assist while freshman goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) stopped eight shots but suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Barton returns home to take on Belmont Abbey in a league contest Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., while Converse remains at home to host Mars Hill Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
