DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Barton College football team (1-1) lost its first game of the 2022 season, 37-17, to Davidson College (1-1), an NCAA Division I school, Saturday evening at Richardson Stadium.
The Wildcats, running the option, rushed for 403 yards on 64 carries and scored 27 of their 37 points in the first half to pick up their first victory of the season.
Davidson's Dylan Sparks (Centreville, Va.) rushed for two touchdowns in the first half and T.J. Magee (Denham Springs, La.) returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score in the first quarter as the home team built a 27-14 halftime lead and maintained advantage the rest of the way for the win.
Five Wildcats rushed for at least 60 yards on the night including Coy Williams (Lumberton, Texas) with a game-high 84 yards in addition to a rushing touchdown. Davidson held a 435-270 advantage in total yards and picked off two passes as well.

Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored both Bulldogs' touchdowns in the first half on receptions of 15 and 30 yards, respectively. Trailing by a 21-14 score with just under four minutes to go before intermission, Barton turned the ball over on downs with two stops by the Wildcats at the Davidson one-yard-line which proved to be pivotal in the contest.
Johnson had five catches for 53 yards on the night while sophomore running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) added 99 yards on the ground in the losing effort for the Bulldogs. Barton freshman linebacker
Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore linebacker
Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) each finished with a game-high 14 tackles in the losing effort.
Barton remains on the road to take on UVA Wise in its South Atlantic Conference opener next Saturday, September 17, beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Wise, Va., while Davidson hosts St. Andrews next Saturday at 7:00 p.m., as well.
