MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton football team (1-0) opened the 2022 campaign with a 17-3 victory over Chowan (0-1) Thursday night at Garrison Stadium.

Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) opened the scoring with the game-winning 68-yard touchdown catch just five minutes into the contest while sophomore running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) added 178 yards rushing and a score in the win. Terrell, the nation's second-leading rusher last fall, found the end zone on a eight-yard touchdown run in the final frame to put the contest away.
The Bulldogs held a 10-0 advantage at halftime but a pair of red zone interceptions and a blocked field goal in the first half kept the Hawks in the contest. Barton totaled 413 yards of offense including 247 yards on the ground while sophomore quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added 235 yards of total offense – 166 through the air and 69 on the ground – in the win.
On defense, Barton was led by sophomore linebacker
Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) with eight tackles and 2.5 quarterback sacks while sophomore defensive back
Mike Webb (Winterville, N.C.) had both interceptions for the visitors.
Chowan was held out of the end zone and was limited to just 263 yards of total offense. The Hawks scored on a 40-yard field goal by Kyle Lotz (Brisbane, AUSTRALIA) at the 4:19 mark of the third quarter which capped off a 10-play, 76-yard drive.
Barton remains on the road next Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Davidson, N.C., to face Davidson beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Chowan hosts Tusculum on Saturday, September 10, at 1:00 p.m.
