WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (1-2) suffered a 2-1 setback to Catawba (1-1) Wednesday evening at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex in a midweek regional contest.
The Indians scored two goals in the first half – the first on a penalty kick by Tom Savigar (Liskeard, ENGLAND) in the 15th minute and second by Sebastia Cerda-Tous (Mallorca, SPAIN) at the 25:26 mark – as the visitors registered their first win of the year.
Cerda-Tous found the back of the net off a free kick by Joseph Allerton (York, ENGLAND), who was credited with the assist. Catawba also prevailed despite Barton holding a 15-9 advantage in shots taken.
Barton's lone goal of the match came at the 54:24 mark of the second half when sophomore forward
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) scored on a penalty kick as well. The goal was Slemer Lopes' first of the season.
In goal, Catawba's Zak Stiffler (Jacksonville, N.C.) earned the victory after stopping six shots while Barton freshman
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) took the loss. Gunnarsson was credited with a save.
Barton looks to bounce back with its first match on the road Saturday at USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C., beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Catawba faces Belmont Abbey Saturday in Belmont, N.C., at 7:00 p.m., as well.
