WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (5-4, 3-0) stayed perfect in Conference Carolinas play with a 20-13 victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) (3-3, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.
Barton freshman midfielder
Kate Matuza (Hampstead, N.C.) finished with a game-high seven goals and four assists as the Bulldogs shook off an early deficit to win their fourth straight game.
The Bulldogs spotted the Lions a 3-0 lead just five minutes into the contest but rebounded with five straight goals – including the first three from Matuza – and Barton never trailed again.
Emmanuel's Bailie Garland (Pike, Ga.) led the visitors with five goals as the Lions rallied themselves from a 13-6 deficit to cut the margin to one with six straight goals in the third period but Barton was able to hold on.
Sophomore attacker
Sydney Quinn (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) scored four times for the Bulldogs to increase her team-leading total to 26 on the year and freshman midfielder
Renee Perkins (Apex, N.C.) added three goals in the win.
In goal, Barton freshman
Olivia LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) played three of the four periods and stopped five shots while Emmanuel's Laila Sampson (Dacula, Ga.) suffered the loss despite 11 saves on the afternoon.
Barton remains at home to take on Frostburg State on Thursday beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Emmanuel remains in league play and will face Lees-McRae Thursday at 4:00 p.m., in Banner Elk, N.C.
