SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (2-2) moved back to .500 on the season with a 12-11 victory over Catawba (0-3) Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.
Barton freshman midfielder
J.J. Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished with three goals while junior midfielder
B.J. Wilson (Tampa, Fla.) added a pair of goals and an assist as the Bulldogs rallied from a 4-1 deficit then held off a late rally by the Indians themselves for the win.
Catawba's Tucker Fanzo (Harwood, Md.) and Bakari Neely (Toledo, Ohio) scored three goals each for the home team, who tallied the final three scores of the contest and had a chance to tie but the final shot was blocked.
With the score knotted at eight, Mitchell would score what would be the game-winner with just five seconds left in the third period. Barton held slight edges in both shots taken (43-42) and ground balls (42-32) in the victory.
In goal, senior
Trevor Witholt (Murrieta, Calif.) came up big for the Bulldogs, earning the victory while tallying 11 saves. Catawba's goalkeeper, Tyler Holland (Greensboro, N.C.), suffered the loss despite 18 stops.
Barton returns home to take on Coker on Saturday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Catawba next plays Belmont Abbey on Saturday, March 5, beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Belmont, N.C.
