NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-2) suffered a 12-9 setback to Newberry (1-1) Tuesday afternoon in an NCAA Division II match at Setzler Field.
The Wolves, picking up their first win of the season, were led by Chloe Wood (Sherwood Park, Alberta, CANADA) with four goals while Cassell Richardson (Forest, Va.) added three scores as the home team jumped out to a 9-3 advantage and held off the Bulldogs to earn the win.
Barton was led by sophomore midfielder
Jayden Smith (Windermere, Fla.) with three goals and the Bulldogs closed the gap to one goal on two occasions – 9-8 and 10-9 – but Wood closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the final 3:35 of the match. Freshman midfielder
Kate Matuza (Hampstead, N.C.) added three assists for Barton.
Newberry held the advantage in both shots taken (27-22) and ground balls (14-12) while Mack Dorr (Riverhead, N.Y.) made nine stops in goal for the victory for the Wolves. Barton freshman goalkeeper
Olivia LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) suffered the loss despite nine saves as well.
Barton remains on the road to take on Young Harris on Sunday beginning at Noon in Young Harris, Ga., while Newberry hosts Southern Wesleyan Friday at 4:00 p.m.
