WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the year, 16-12, to Catawba (2-1) Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field.
Catawba's Mercedez Boucicaut (Sanford, Fla.) finished with a game-high five goals to go along with three assists as the Indians reeled off five straight scores after falling behind a 2-1 score early in the first period to control and never trailed the rest of the way.
Barton – led by freshmen attackers
Reagan Kemppainen (Emerald Isle, N.C.) and
Avery Woodcock (Wilmington, N.C.) and sophomore attacker
Sydney Quinn (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) with three goals each – cut the margin to two goals on three occasions but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. Quinn leads the team with eight goals scored so far this year.
Barton held a 37-23 advantage despite the setback. Catawba's starting goalkeeper, Aryn Dorr (Chesapeake Beach, Md.), earned the victory after stopping 15 shots while Barton's
Olivia LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss in goal after making four saves and playing the first half.
Barton hits the road for the first time this season when the Bulldogs travel to Newberry, S.C., to take on Newberry on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Catawba visits Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C., next Saturday, February 26, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
