Barton men’s basketball takes 45 Second Classic with 69-64 victory over Saint Augustine’s

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (2-2) was the lone squad to win both games in its annual 45 Second Classic with a 69-64 victory over Saint Augustine's (2-1) Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium in the fourth and final contest of the doubleheader showcase.

Barton sophomore guard Marcus Boykin (Clinton, N.C.) was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bulldogs as he finished with 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds for a double-double while senior guard Donaven Hairston (Atlanta, Ga.) added 12 points as the Barton rallied from a halftime deficit in its second straight contest to even its record at .500 on the year.  Boykin leads the team in scoring at 21.0 points per contest.

Saint Augustine's was paced by Nemo Johnson (Baton Rouge, La.) with 14 points but the Falcons couldn't hold a 14-point advantage – 27-13 with 9:14 left in the first half – in suffering their first loss of the year.

Barton junior guard Shawn Nelson (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) and senior forward Trevon Spencer (Columbia, N.C.) added 11 points each while Spencer pulled down eight boards and blocked four shots in the victory.  Trailing by a 47-40 score with just under 13 minutes left, the Bulldogs went on a 16-2 run to take the lead for good highlighted by Spencer's trey which proved to be the game-winner.

Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday when the Bulldogs host Southern Wesleyan beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Saint Augustine's travels to Pembroke, N.C., to take on UNC Pembroke Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.   Coker escaped Mount Olive, 96-95, in the first contest of the day.
