NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry football team (5-1, 3-1), ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, scored on their first six full possessions on its way to a 42-21 victory over Barton (2-4, 1-3) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference Piedmont Division contest at Setzler Field.
The Wolves, bouncing back from their first loss last Saturday, received 159 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Mario Anderson (Summerville, S.C.) – all in the first half – while quarterback Brayden Phillips (Lancaster, S.C.) threw a pair of scores in the victory.
Barton tried to match blow-for-blow with Newberry as the visitors scored on their first two possessions – a one-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back
Malcolm Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) and a 28-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) to senior wide receiver
Nate Byers (Trinity, N.C.) – in the first quarter but the Bulldogs couldn't keep up.
Newberry broke the contest open with a 21-point second quarter including a 63-yard rushing score from Anderson. Tommy Washington (Spartanburg, S.C.) added a score rushing and receiving and his five-yard touchdown run early in the second stanza proved to be the game-winner.
Barton held a 410-324 edge in rushing yards despite the loss while sophomore running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) added 180 yards on the ground and a score in the losing effort. Newberry's Luke Taylor (Summerville, S.C.) led the Wolves' defense with a team-high eight tackles, two quarterback hits and one interception.
Barton hosts No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne in a league and division contest next Saturday, October 15, at 4:00 p.m., while Newberry faces Catawba in Salisbury, N.C., on Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m.
