Barton women’s soccer takes care of Francis Marion, 2-0 at home

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (5-4, 5-2) returned home to shut out Francis Marion (1-7-2, 0-5-1) by a 2-0 score Wednesday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas contest at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.

Barton freshman forward Corinne Denham (Greenville, N.C.) and senior midfielder Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.) both scored their third goals of the season as the Bulldogs won their second straight match.  Both players also scored in their second consecutive contest.

Denham opened the scoring just 2:18 into the contest after corralling a long pass down the center of the field from senior forward Kassie Krul (Rockport, Maine) and shooting it past the keeper.  Russell gave the Bulldogs a two-goal advantage with a free kick from the top of the box that found the back of the net in the 65th minute.

Barton held a 13-12 edge in shots taken while senior goalkeeper Rachel Cox (Wilson, N.C.) notched her fourth shutout of the year after tallying three saves.  Francis Marion's Makayla Willets (Mastic, N.Y.) totaled seven stops but suffered the loss in goal.

Barton remains at home to take on Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., in a league contest while Francis Marion hosts Emmanuel (Ga.) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
