WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (4-6-1, 3-3-1) scored late on a penalty kick to force a 1-1 tie with Francis Marion (4-4-4, 3-1-2) Wednesday night at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex in a Conference Carolinas match.
Barton sophomore forward
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL), an all-league pick, scored his fourth goal of the year on a penalty kick at the 68:30 mark of the match to tie the Patriots.
Francis Marion opened the scoring just 3:19 into the match when Jhancarlo Palma (Caracas, VENEZUELA) intercepted an errant Barton pass at the top of the box and found the right corner of the net. The Bulldogs, who held a 13-8 advantage in shots taken, kept the Patriots off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
In goal, Barton freshman
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivek, ICELAND) made three saves while Francis Marion's Andrea Scapalo (Milan, ITALY) stopped five shots in the tie.
Barton hosts Lees-McRae in a league match Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. while Francis Marion returns home to take on Emmanuel on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
