Barton football frozen out by Wingate on the road, 28-3

WINGATE, N.C. – The Wingate football team (7-1, 5-1) turned up its defense in a 28-3 victory over Barton (2-6, 1-5) Saturday evening in a South Atlantic Conference Piedmont Divisional contest at Irwin Belk Stadium.

Wingate quarterback Shaw Crocker (Greenville, S.C.) passed for four touchdowns and the home team held a 501-92 advantage in total yards in the victory.  Wingate also rushed for 302 yards – led by Kalen Clark (Charlotte, N.C.) with 111 yards – in winning its fourth straight game.

Wingate took control early when Crocker found Tremel Jones (Hamlet, N.C.) for a 54-yard touchdown reception on its opening drive.  Wingate found the end zone on four of its five possessions as well.

Barton was held out of the end zone for the second straight game with its lone points coming off the foot of senior placekicker Jackson Brooks (Elon, N.C.), who kicked a 29-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

On defense, Barton kept Wingate off the board in the second half while freshman linebacker Matt Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) had a game-high 14 tackles in the losing effort.

Barton looks to bounce back next Saturday, October 29, when it hosts Catawba for Homecoming at Truist Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Wingate travels to No. 12 Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
