Barton football succumbs to Newberry, 31-7, in season opener

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College football team (0-1) suffered a 31-7 loss to Newberry (1-0) in the Fall 2021 season opener Saturday afternoon in front of nearly 3,000 fans at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

The Wolves – led by redshirt freshman running back Mario Anderson (Summerville, S.C.) with 171 yards on 16 carries including a touchdown – scored on their first two possessions and never looked back.  Newberry finished with 279 yards on the ground and totaled nearly 400 yards (396) of total offense in the victory.

Barton cut the margin to 13-7 with 11:48 remaining in the first half when redshirt freshman Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) found freshman tight end Jack White (Goldsboro, N.C.) from two yards out to complete a 12-play, 64-yard drive but the Bulldogs were held off the board the rest of the way.

Newberry took control with a four-play, 80-yard drive later in the half capped off by a 29-yard pass from Dre Harris (Greenville, S.C.) to Bobby Irby (Irmo, S.C.).  Harris threw two touchdown passes and finished with 117 yards passing while the Wolves' defense limited the Bulldogs to 260 yards of offense including 80 yards through the air.

Newberry, which added 10 points in the second half, defeated Barton for the second time in less than a year.  The Wolves downed the Bulldogs by a 20-17 score last March.  Redshirt freshman running back Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) led the Bulldogs' ground game with 108 yards while redshirt freshman defensive back Kendarius Jenkins (Tarboro, N.C.) finished with a team-high 10 tackles in the losing effort.

Barton hits the road to take on Erskine on Saturday, September 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Newberry hosts North Greenville next Saturday as well starting at 6:00 p.m.
