Barton women’s soccer holds on for home victory over Shaw, 1-0

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's soccer team (4-2-1) made it two victories in a row with a 1-0 triumph over Shaw (2-6) Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.

Barton freshman defender Gianna Ferigne (Brick, N.J.) scored the lone goal of the match at the 65:03 mark of the second half when she kicked in a saved shot in the box courtesy of senior defender Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.), who was credited with the assist.  The goal was Ferigne's first in her collegiate career.

Barton junior goalkeeper Rachel Cox (Wilson, N.C.) earned the shutout victory after stopping four shots including an outstanding save with one hand with just over a minute left in the contest to preserve the victory for the home team.

Barton held a 17-10 advantage in shots taken while Maude Rouanet (Paris, FRANCE) suffered the loss in goal for the Bears despite allowing just one goal while totaling five saves.

Barton looks to stay on the winning path when the Bulldogs host King (Tenn.) in a Conference Carolinas match on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Shaw hosts Bluefield State on Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
