SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton College football team (1-2) fell to Catawba (3-0) by a 17-10 Saturday afternoon in an NCAA Division II contest at Shuford Stadium after the Indians held off a late rally by the Bulldogs for the win.
Catawba quarterback Ken Avent (Faison, N.C.) scored on touchdown runs of 47 and 14 yards, respectively, in the second half and the Indians scored 17 straight points after intermission after spotting Barton a 3-0 halftime advantage in the victory.
Trailing by a 17-10 score, the Bulldogs drove to the Indians' 21-yard line on the game's final drive but Catawba's defense stiffened and a quarterback sack on the contest's next-to-last play proved pivotal for the home team.
Barton redshirt freshman quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored the lone touchdown for the visitors with a six-yard run late in the fourth quarter to cut the margin in half. Lynch finished with 136 yards passing but was picked off twice and sacked three times. Barton redshirt freshman running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramsuer, N.C.) led the ground game with 177 yards on 35 carries.
Catawba's Jyrea Martin (Greenwood, S.C.) finished with 105 yards rushing and Avent added 95 yards on the ground in the victory.
On defense, Barton redshirt freshman free safety
Kendarius Jenkins (Tarboro, N.C.) led all tacklers with 12 while redshirt freshman defensive end
J.L. Ledbetter (Sanford, N.C.) forced two fumbles and totaled 3.5 tackles for a loss despite the setback. Catawba was limited to just 279 yards of offense as well.
Barton remains on the road to wrap up a three-game road stand next Saturday, September 25, when the Bulldogs travel to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone beginning at 7:00 p.m. Catawba, meanwhile, faces Wingate on the road on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., in Wingate, N.C.
