Barton women’s soccer opens league play with 2-1 triumph over Emmanuel

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (2-1, 1-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a 2-1 victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) (1-1, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

Barton senior midfielder and captain Evie Kenna (Aldhershot, ENGLAND) broke a one-all tie with the match-winner in the 67th minute after taking control of a deflected shot and finishing in the bottom right corner of the net from just under 35 yards out.  The goal was Kenna's second of the season, both match-winners.

Barton opened the scoring at the 32:54 mark of the first half when freshman midfielder Emely Pichardo (Reading, Pa.) took advantage of a failed clear by a defender and one-touched the ball into the net for the goal.

Emmanuel's score came in the 62nd minute when Olivia Welder (Salzburg, AUSTRIA) finished off a free kick from Moriah Logue (Fairfield, Pa.).

Barton held a 16-11 advantage in shots taken while senior goalkeeper Kristin Davis (Willow Spring, N.C.) earned the victory after tallying a pair of saves while Julia Styrmisodottir (Reykjavik, ICELAND) suffered the loss in goal for the Lions despite a half a dozen saves.

Barton hits the road to take on Belmont Abbey on Friday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m., in a league match in Belmont, N.C., while Emmanuel takes on Young Harris Tuesday night at home at 7:00 p.m.
