WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (1-1, 1-0) notched its first victory of the season, 2-0 over Emmanuel (Ga.) (0-2, 0-1) on Saturday evening at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium in the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams.
Barton freshman midfielder
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior midfielder
Luis Hernandez Velasco (Guadarrama, SPAIN) both scored and assisted the other as the Bulldogs rallied from last Sunday's setback to Catawba.
Slemer Lopes opened the scoring just 8:25 into the match after finishing off a cross to the middle of the field from Hernandez Velasco and placing the ball in the top right corner of the net for the goal. Slemer Lopes assisted Hernandez for the second goal in the 60th minute after leading him down the left side of the field.
Barton doubled up Emmanuel in shots taken, 18-9, while junior goalkeeper
Jacob Randolph (Metairie, La.) notched the shutout victory in goal after tallying six saves. The Lions' goalkeeper, Rodrigo De La Terga (Caracas, VENEZUELA), suffered the loss despite stopping three shots.
Barton travels to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey on Saturday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Emmanuel (Ga.) hosts North Greenville next Saturday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m., in league matches.
