WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (17-18) opened the 2021 Conference Carolinas Championship with a bang in downing Southern Wesleyan (11-28), 23-6, Wednesday night at Fleming Stadium. The Bulldogs are the fifth seed in the tournament while the Warriors were seeded eighth.
Barton senior outfielder
Travious Ford (Greenville, N.C.) hit three home runs including two round-trippers in the first inning as part of a nine-run frame and the Bulldogs never looked back on their way to the win. Ford also drove in six runs for the Bulldogs.
Barton senior first baseman
Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) added four hits and five runs batted in including a two-run home run as the Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak and finished with 23 hits on the evening.
On the mound, Barton junior
Alex Hart (Raleigh, N.C.) improved to 4-4 on the season after pitching seven innings and striking out nine batters. For Southern Wesleyan, Tanner Glass (Bedford, Mich.) hit a two-run home run as well but fell to 5-2 after taking the loss.
Barton moves into the double elimination part of the tournament and will take on second-seeded North Greenville (29-10), ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, on Thursday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m.
