Barton baseball overwhelms Virginia State, 25-6, in mid-week home affair

WILSON, N.C. -  The Barton baseball team (4-7) opened the offensive floodgates on Virginia State (3-1) in a 25-6 victory Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.

Barton, which fell behind by a 4-0 score early in the contest, used a 10-run fifth inning and a seven-run eighth frame to roll to the win.  Junior infielder Dylan Scaranda (Galloway, N.J.) hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs while junior outfielder Peyton Creech (Zebulon, N.C.) added four RBI in the victory.

Creech's sacrifice fly in the third inning broke a four-all tie and gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.  At one point, the Bulldogs scored 18 straight runs in the contest.

On the mound, senior Shawn Harrison (Queens, N.Y.) (1-0) was credited with the win while Virginia State's Nicholas Woolfolk (Richmond, Va.) was tagged with the loss.  Barton senior outfielder Travious Ford (Greenville, N.C.) added three hits and three RBI for the Bulldogs, who totaled 21 hits on the day.

Barton steps back into Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Mount Olive, N.C., to face third-ranked Mount Olive in a doubleheader beginning at Noon while Virginia State takes on Bluefield State College on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m., in a doubleheader as well.
