MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (5-7, 4-3) picked up a huge road Conference Carolinas victory Friday with a 2-1 triumph over second-ranked Mount Olive (10-3, 7-2) at Scarborough Field. The Trojans are ranked No. 2 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Poll.
Barton junior
Alex Hart (Raleigh, N.C.) (1-3) earned his first victory of the season after allowing just one run in going the distance. Hart struck out nine batters on 122 pitches.
Junior third baseman
Dylan Scaranda (Galloway, N.J.) drove in both runs for the Bulldogs: an RBI double in the fourth frame and the game-winning run-scoring single in the eighth inning. Junior shortstop
Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) finished with three hits and scored the game-winning run for Barton, who also won its fourth straight league contest.
For Mount Olive, Vito Patierno (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a run-scoring triple and Reed Parris (Kinston, N.C.) (3-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one earned run while pitching into the eighth inning with seven strikeouts.
The two teams will play a league doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon on the campus of the University of Mount Olive.
