WILSON, N.C. - The Barton men's soccer team (3-0, 3-0) stayed perfect on the season after holding off Belmont Abbey (1-6, 1-1), 2-1, in a Conference Carolinas match Monday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium.
The Bulldogs received goals from freshman forward
Chris Nejstgaard (Birkerod, DENMARK) and sophomore forward
Immanuel Akpeme (Richmond, Va.) and were able to withstand a late goal from the Crusaders in the win.
Nejstgaard scored in the 34th minute after knocking in a saved free kick from sophomore forward
Pedro Valladares (Durham, N.C.) while Akpeme found the back of the net courtesy of a pass from sophomore forward
Omar Aboutaleb (Asheboro, N.C.) at the 50:42 mark of the second half. Both players notched their first goals of the season.
Belmont Abbey's Sander Herlofsen (Kristiansand, NORWAY) kicked in his own saved penalty kick with just under seven minutes left but Barton was able to hold on. In goal, sophomore
Jacob Randolph (Metairie, La.) made three stops to earn the win while Belmont Abbey's Noah Stanger (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA) suffered the loss. The Crusaders held a 12-11 advantage in shots taken in the setback.
Barton hits the road to take on Mount Olive on Sunday, March 21, at 1:00 p.m., in Mount Olive, N.C., while Belmont Abbey takes on Lees-McRae on Sunday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m., in Charlotte, N.C., at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.
