Barton baseball outlasted in 13 innings by No. 16 Ashland, 11-8

WILSON, N.C. -  The Barton College baseball team (3-7) rallied from a five-run deficit to force extra innings but eventually fell to No. 16 Ashland (Ohio) (2-0), 11-8, Thursday evening at Fleming Stadium in the annual Wilson Tobs D2 College Classic.

The Eagles broke an eight-all tie with three unearned runs in the top of the 13th inning with Logan Moss (Lewis Center, Ohio) scoring the winning run. 

Barton rallied from an 8-3 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning capped off when sophomore catcher Bradley McLean (Hurst, Texas) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.  McLean finished with a pair of runs batted in.

Ashland was led by Carson Mittermaier (Wharton, Ohio) with three hits and two runs batted in while Jake Depperschmidt (Mansfield, Ohio) (1-0) pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball while striking out 11 batters on his way to the win.

Barton junior third baseman Dylan Scaranda (Galloway, N.J.) finished with three hits and an RBI while senior Clay Walters (Wake Forest, N.C.) fell to 0-1 after being tagged with the loss in relief.

Barton next hosts Virginia State at Nixon Field on Tuesday, March 9, beginning at 2:30 p.m., while Ashland hosts Tiffin (Ohio) at Fleming Stadium on Friday starting at 11:00 a.m.  Earlier in the day, Ashland defeated Cedarville (Ohio) by an 11-8 score.
