WILSON, N.C. – The Barton football team (0-4, 0-3) may have played its best game of the season but ultimately fell to Newberry (3-1, 3-1), 20-17, Saturday evening in a rain-delayed South Atlantic Conference game at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium.
A desperation pass by freshman quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was picked off by David Vereen (Florence, S.C.) – his second interception of the day – on the game's final play five yards short of the end zone as Newberry was able to hold on for the win.
Newberry, which saw Barton reel off 17 straight points after taking a 10-0 lead to start the contest in the first quarter, kicked the game-winning field goal courtesy of Avery Funderburk (Lancaster, S.C.) with 13:24 left in the contest. Newberry held sizeable advantages in both total offense (451-226) and time of possession (37:15-22:45) but allowed Barton to stay in the game thanks to a pair of turnovers and several costly penalties.
Barton freshman wide receiver
Jackson Perrell (Lexington, N.C.) caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and freshman
Malcolm Wilson, Jr. (Salisbury, N.C.) was on the receiving end of a two-yard touchdown pass – both from Lynch – in the losing effort. Lynch also passed for 109 yards and led the squad with 59 yards on the ground as well.
Newberry's Catriez Cook (Gilbert, S.C.) powered the Wolves' 253-yard ground game with 132 yards on 18 carries and a score while Andre Banks (Summerville, S.C.) added 140 yards receiving on six catches to lead the visitors offensively. Cook's two-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter tied the score at 17-all.
On defense, freshman defensive back
Mike Webb (Winterville, N.C.) led all tacklers with 11 while freshman defensive back
Connor Stanley (Garner, N.C.) had a 63-yard fumble return for the Bulldogs.
Barton hits the road to take on Catawba on Saturday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m., in Salisbury, N.C., while Newberry hosts Erskine next Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., as well.
