Barton women’s soccer falls on the road to Mount Olive, 2-1

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (1-2-1, 1-2-1) couldn't hold a one-goal first-half lead and fell to Mount Olive (3-0, 3-0), 2-1, Wednesday evening in a Conference Carolinas contest at Amon Field.

The Trojans' Riley Baker (Danyers, Mass.) scored the match-winner in the 63rd minute of action off a blocked shot from teammate Jasmine Painter (Baltimore, Md.).  UMO's Jaelyn Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tied the score at one on a penalty kick just over a minute after halftime.

Barton's goal came courtesy of junior midfielder Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.).  Russell scored her second goal of the season at the 16:22 mark of the first half.

Mount Olive held a 17-14 advantage in shots taken in remaining unbeaten on the season.  In goal, the Trojans' Taylor Lewis (Hamilton, Ohio) stopped three shots to earn the win while the Bulldogs' sophomore Rachel Cox (Wilson, N.C.) suffered the loss despite nine saves on the night.

Barton returns home to face North Greenville on Sunday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas game at 1:00 p.m., at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium while Mount Olive takes on Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C., on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., as well.
