WILSON, N.C. – The Barton college women's lacrosse team (4-1, 2-1) was dealt its first loss of the year, 13-7 to Mount Olive (5-1, 3-0) Tuesday night in a Conference Carolinas game at chilly and rainy Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium. Mount Olive is ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II.
Three players scored twice for the Trojans – Nola Wesche (Auburn, N.H.), Kelly Young (Bayport, N.Y.) and Bria Hamilton (British Columbia, CANADA) – as the visitors took control with the first three goals of the second half after holding a slim 5-4 advantage at intermisson
Barton was led by freshman midfielder
Jayden Smith (Winter Garden, Fla.) with three goals but the Bulldogs were hurt by 25 turnovers in the setback.
Mount Olive held the advantage in shots taken (33-17) while Ciara Moorman (Parkville, Md.) earned the win in goal after stopping six shots. Barton senior goalkeeper
Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Ohio) suffered the loss despite 13 saves on the night.
Barton remains at home to take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas game on Wednesday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m., while Mount Olive hosts Young Harris on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
