Barton women’s lacrosse can’t match Belmont Abbey in home setback

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (4-2, 2-2) fell behind early and simply couldn't recover in a 21-7 loss to Belmont Abbey (7-1, 4-0) Wednesday evening in a Conference Carolinas match at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

The Crusaders' Riley D'Andrea (Famingdale, N.Y.) scored a half-dozen times while Angelina Perrone (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) added four goals as Belmont Abbey built a 15-4 halftime advantage and never looked back.

Belmont Abbey kept the pressure on by scoring the first five goals after intermission as the visitors pushed their winning streak to seven matches.

Barton was led by freshman midfielder Jayden Smith (Winter Garden, Fla.) with a pair of goals and an assist while senior attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) added a score and two assists but the Crusaders were simply too much for the Bulldogs.

In goal, Belmont Abbey's Michelle Guppy (Hebron, Conn.) earned the win after making eight saves while Barton senior Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) suffered the loss.  Mattena made six stops on the evening.  Belmont Abbey held the advantage in both shots taken (31-23) and ground balls (17-13) in the win as well.

Barton hits the road to take on Lees-McRae on Saturday in a league match beginning at 3:00 p.m., in Banner Elk, N.C., while Belmont Abbey faces Erskine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., in Due West, S.C.
