Barton football suffers setback to national-power Wingate at home

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College football team (0-2) fought hard but the opponent proved way too much as Wingate (1-0) downed the Bulldogs by a 55-14 score Saturday at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium.

Wingate, 10-2 last year and ranked No. 19 in the nation, jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead and never looked back and handed the home team its second setback of the season.

Wingate quarterback Shaw Crocker (Greenville, S.C.) passed for 175 yards and two scores in one half of play while K.J. Henderson, Jr. (Richmond, Va.) scored three times on the ground in the win as the visitors ran up 480 yards of total offense in the win.

Despite the loss, Barton did outgain Wingate on the ground by a 188-178 margin and freshman wide receiver Jackson Perrell (Lexington, N.C.) caught two passes for 89 yards.  Barton redshirt freshman running back Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) and freshman quarterback Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) also found the end zone on the ground.  Terrell has three touchdowns on the season.

Wingate's special teams came up big as well as Mark Burks (Fayetteville, N.C.) blocked both a field goal and a punt and returned the blocked punt for a score.

Barton takes on another NCAA Division II power in Lenoir-Rhyne next Saturday, March 20, at Moretz Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.  LR was 13-1 last season and finished the year ranked No. 4 in the nation.  Wingate hosts Catawba on Saturday, March 27, at 4:00 p.m.
