Barton men’s and women’s swimming take second place at the Pacer Invite

CARY, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams both finished second overall at the Pacer Invite, hosted by William Peace University, which concluded Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center.

The women's squad for the Bulldogs finished with 715.5 points while UNC Pembroke (830.5 points) took top honors.  In the men's competition, Southern Virginia (769 points) won out while Barton totaled 625 points.  The Bulldogs won 14 total events, eight on the men's side and six on the women's side.

The Barton women's swimming team was led by senior Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA).  Cathers won the 50-yard freestyle (24.06) and was part of three first-place relays:  400-yard medley relay (3:58.17), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.00) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.93).

Junior Moira Euker (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore Emme Ham (Plantation, Fla.) also placed first in the women's 200-yard backstroke (2:07.23) and women's 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.17), respectively, for the Bulldogs.  Both swimmers joined Cathers on the winning medley relays as well.

On the men's side, Barton was paced by freshman Georgi Tsurev (Blagoevgrad, BULGARIA) and sophomore Ethan Maddrey (Sims, N.C.).  Both swimmers combined to win five events:  Tsurev in the 50-yard freestyle (21.40) and 100-yard (50.48) and 200-yard (1:50.06) backstrokes and Maddrey in the 200-yard (1:43.88) and 500-yard (4:46.11) freestyle events.  Both swimmers were also part of the Bulldogs' first-place men's 200-yard (1:25.57) and 400-yard (3:06.93) freestyle relays. 

Finally, Barton freshman Lucas Knopsnyder (Ephrata, Pa.) won the men's 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:33.45 and freshman David Szlobodnyik (Dunaujvaros, HUNGARY) touched the wall first in the men's 100-yard butterfly (50.06).

The Barton swimming teams return to the pool on Saturday, January 15, 2022, to compete in the Chowan Tri-Meet in Murfreesboro, N.C., beginning at 1:00 p.m.
