BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (8-4, 7-2) came away with a big Conference Carolinas road win over Lees-McRae (7-5-2, 5-3-1), 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Tate Field.
Barton senior midfielder
Luis Hernandez Velasco (Guadarrama, SPAIN), the team's leading scorer, tallied both goals including the match-winner in the 85th minute.
Velasco, who leads the team with 10 goals on the season, found the bottom right corner of the net off a shot from the top of the box. Junior forward
Immanuel Akpeme (Richmond, Va.) was credited with the assist for the Bulldogs.
The match-winning goal came just 37 seconds after Lees-McRae's Harrison Watts (Clarksville, Tenn.) tied the score at one for the home team.
Velasco opened the scoring at the 17:37 mark after finishing off a shot right in front of the net on the left side on a cross by freshman midfielder
Gabriel Slemer Lopes (Charlotte, N.C.). Velasco had his second multi-goal match of the year as well.
Barton junior goalkeeper
Jacob Randolph (Metairie, La.) notched four saves and was credited with the win while Lees-McRae's Joshua Garvilla (St. Charles, Mo.) suffered the loss despite seven stops. The Bobcats also held a 17-15 edge in shots taken.
