WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College men's basketball team (1-3, 1-3) picked up its first win of the year in impressive fashion, 105-79, over King (Tenn.) (2-5, 1-4) Tuesday evening in the Bulldogs' home opener at Wilson Gymnasium in Conference Carolinas action.
Six players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs – led by freshman guard
Marcus Boykin (Clinton, N.C.) with a game-high 22 points – while sophomore guard
Brandon Burford (Charlotte, N.C.) added 18 points as the home team shot 55 percent (39-of-71) from the field in the win.
Barton jumped out to a 51-39 advantage at halftime and kept its double-digit advantage the rest of the way. Barton sophomore guard
Trevon Spencer (Columbia, N.C.) chipped in with 16 points and the Bulldogs connected on 21-of-23 free throw attempts (91 percent) and forced the Tornado into 19 turnovers in the contest.
King, losers of three straight games, was led by Isaiah Curry (Windermere, Fla.) with 16 points in the setback. Barton's defense also got into the act, blocking nine shots led by Spencer's six swats.
Barton remains at home to take on rival Mount Olive Thursday at 7:00 p.m., while King travels to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., in a Conference Carolinas contest.
