MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (0-1) fell to Chowan (1-0) by a 95-65 score Wednesday night at the Hawks Athletic Center and Bob Burke Court in the 2020-21 season and Conference Carolinas opener.
Chowan was led by Jaedon Willis (Randallstown, Md.) with a game-high 22 points and was one of four players to score in double figures for the Hawks, who shot 56 percent (32-of-58) from the field. The Hawks also won at the charity stripe, hitting 22-of-27 free throws compared to a five-for-six performance by the Bulldogs.
Barton was led by junior guard
Melvin Worley (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore guard
Brandon Burford (Charlotte, N.C.) with 18 and 17 points, respectively, but the Bulldogs fell behind by a 47-34 score at intermission and could not get within seven points the rest of the way.
Chowan used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to push its advantage to 71-52 with 8:22 left in the contest to put the game away. The Hawks also held a 40-30 advantage in rebounds in the win as well.
In the next round of Conference Carolinas games on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., the Bulldogs will travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey while Chowan visits North Greenville.
