Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (10-12) fell twice to Francis Marion (24-3) in a home doubleheader, 5-3 and 14-3, Sunday afternoon at Jeffries Field.
Game One – Francis Marion 5, Barton 3
The Patriots' Savana Rosson (Gilbert, S.C.) hit a pair of RBI singles as Francis Marion broke a one-all tie with a pair of runs in the third inning and held on in the end for the win.
Francis Marion's Katelyn Ellard (Cary, N.C.) improved to 15-3 on the year after allowing just one unearned run in the complete game victory to go along with 11 strikeouts.
Barton junior pinch hitter Hayley Grizzle (Rocky Point, N.C.) and freshman second baseman Emily Bell (Bunn, N.C.) both drive in runs while freshman AnnaKate Gilchrist (Clayton, N.C.) suffered the loss. The Bulldogs scored twice in the sixth inning and left the bases loaded but couldn't get any closer.
Game Two – Francis Marion 14, Barton 3 (five innings)
The Patriots held a 3-1 advantage entering the fifth inning then exploded for 11 runs to run-rule the Bulldogs and complete the sweep. Megan Matsil (Indian Trail, N.C.) and Jaiden Kiser (Maiden, N.C.) both drove in three runs while Rachel Davis (Mechanicsville, N.C.) improved to 4-0 with the victory.
For Barton, Grizzle and junior catcher Kelsey Carroll (Lake Waccamaw, N.C.) tallied run-scoring singles while Emma Liles (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) was tagged with the loss on the mound. Barton was also hurt by five errors which led to four unearned runs.
Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, March 14, when the Bulldogs host Limestone in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Francis Marion hosts No. 7 North Georgia on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., as well.
