Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (4-0) kept its perfect record intact with a doubleheader sweep of Shaw (0-2), 7-4 and 22-4, Sunday afternoon at Jeffries Field.
Game One – Barton 7, Shaw 4
Barton broke a two-all tie with a three-run third inning highlighted by a two-run single from freshman designated player Lindsey Massengill (Kenly, N.C.).
Junior outfielder Hayley Grizzle (Rocky Point, N.C.) came through with the game-winning RBI single in the frame while junior Jordan Blake (Jackson Springs, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win after relieving the starter in the first inning and going the rest of the way for the Bulldogs. Blake struck out six batters.
Shaw's Alexandria Masnica (Chicago, Ill.) drove in a pair of runs while McKenzie LaCount (Redhill, Ga.) (0-1) suffered the setback in the season opener for the Bears.
Game Two – Barton 22, Shaw 4 (five innings)
Barton put the game away early thanks to a 13-run first inning and finished off the sweep of Shaw. Barton was aided by 10 errors from the Bears which led to 17 unearned runs.
Massengill and freshman second baseman Emily Bell (Bunn, N.C.) both finished with three runs batted in while freshman Shelby Talley (Oxford, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win for Barton. The Bulldogs also finished with 17 hits in the run-ruled contest. Shaw's LaCount (0-2) took the loss.
Barton remains at home to take on Charleston (W.Va.) in a doubleheader next Saturday beginning at Noon while Shaw hosts William Peace on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
