WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's tennis programs have one of the top Head Coaches in NCAA Division II in
Lee Underwood, who is entering his fourth year as mentor of both Bulldogs' teams.
In women's tennis, Underwood's 228 victories rank 23rd overall in active wins and 36th overall in career wins on the NCAA Division II all-time list as compiled by the International Tennis Association (ITA). Underwood, who started coaching collegiately in 1991, has a 636-447 combined record as both a men's and women's mentor – 408-267 on the men's side and 228-210 on the women's side.

Underwood has been a league coach of the year 15 times with coaching stops at Davis & Elkins (1991-2004), West Virginia Wesleyan (2004-10), Edinboro (2010-17) and now Barton (2018-present).
Underwood currently serves on the NCAA National Men's and Women's Tennis Committee and as the ITA Men's Division II National Awards Chair, a position he has held since 2013. Underwood also serves as the regional chair for the men's and women's Southeast Region.
Underwood has led his programs to a combined 10 NCAA postseason appearances in addition to seven conference titles and three regional championships.
A native of Fayetteville, W.Va., Underwood earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1991 from Davis & Elkins and his master's degree from West Virginia in 1996 in physical education.
