Barton men's lacrosse outlasted by Newberry, 20-14, on the road

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry men's lacrosse team (1-0) won its season opener with a 20-14 triumph over Barton (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.  Barton – in its first season of intercollegiate competition – is also playing for the first time on the road.

Trailing by an 11-10 score late in the third stanza, the Wolves broke open a close contest by reeling off 10 straight goals including the game-winner from Belton Bryan (Fairfax, Va.).  Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario, CANADA) led the way for Newberry with a school-record nine points – six goals and three assists – as the home team scored nine times in the fourth and final period.

Barton was led by sophomore midfielders Zachary Hodge (Murrieta, Calif.) and Jake Copio (Smyrna, Del.) with three goals each in the losing effort.  Copio also added two assists for five total points.

Newberry's Dylan Mansur (Edgewater, Md.) and Stone Boone (Stevensville, Md.) both tallied four goals and an assist and the Wolves, who started collegiate play in 2018, also held advantages in both shots taken (46-37) and ground balls (43-35).

In goal, Newberry's Eric Szurley (Holbrook, N.Y.) made three saves and earned the victory while sophomore Matt Stocks (Endicott, N.Y.) made 11 saves for Barton despite the loss.

Barton next competes against Felician on Sunday, February 17, in Baltimore, Md., at 5:00 p.m., while Newberry hosts Shorter on Wednesday, February 13, at 6:00 p.m.
