Barton softball opens 2019 campaign with setbacks to Virginia State and Virginia-Wise

ETTRICK, Va. – The Barton softball team (0-2) opened the 2019 season with a pair of setbacks – 11-10 in eight innings to Virginia State and 11-3 to Virginia-Wise – Saturday afternoon at the Trojans complex.

Trailing by a 10-8 score, the Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the contest.  Virginia State's Kennedy Presson (Petersburg, Va.) stole home to end the game after tying the contest with an RBI triple.  Presson added a three-run home run and finished with four runs batted in.

Barton was led by freshman outfielder Sidney Gronowski (Fayetteville, N.C.) with three hits and three runs batted in while senior first baseman Jessica Onega (Belle Glade, Fla.) totaled four hits but the Bulldogs couldn't hold a 4-0 advantage to start the game.

For Virginia State, Presson also picked up the victory while Brooklynn Bilyard (Culpeper, Va.) drove in a game-high five runs.  Barton sophomore Ashton Pegram (Greensboro, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound.

The Cavaliers' Julia Hoy (Vienna, Va.) broke a two-all tie with the game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the third inning before the Virginia-Wise put the contest away with a four-run fourth frame.  Hoy and Alexis Miles (Hudgins, Va.) led the way with three RBI each while Raychel Lapallo (North Chesterfield, Va.) (1-0) pitched the complete game victory.

Barton sophomore first baseman Jordan Blake (Jackson Springs, N.C.) had a run-scoring double while senior Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) fell to 0-1 on the year after taking the setback.

Barton opens the 2019 home portion of its schedule on Sunday against Chowan beginning at Noon in a doubleheader.
