Barton splits final two matches at Converse Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-Sophomore Alex Ward registered a pair double-digit dig performances including a double-double outing in Barton College's win against St. Andrews University on day two of the Converse College Women's Volleyball Invitational in Hannah Gym Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs went 2-2 in the event and are 2-7 overall. After knocking off the St. Andrews Knights in three sets to start the day, Barton fell to Columbia College in four sets in its finale.

Barton will begin Conference Carolinas play next during the College's Family Weekend when the Lady Bulldogs entertain Emmanuel College on Friday and Erskine College on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs notched a sparkling .393 hitting percentage in rolling to a commanding 25-15, 25-16, 25-17 conquest of the Knights. Senior Melissa Cochran paced the way with 16 kills without an error on 24 swings for a staggering .667 mark. Ward followed with 10 spikes and a .389 hitting percentage.

Ward completed her double-double with a match-high 13 digs.

Freshman setter Riley Bane set up the Lady Bulldogs attack with 33 assists. Senior Jillian Sherman and junior Brittany Edwards tallied five kills apiece while senior libero Amanda Grandy supported BC's defensive efforts with nine digs.

Barton set the momentum of the match by firing at a .450 clip in the first set before winning easily by 10. Ward kept the Lady Bulldogs strong play going with five kills and six digs in the middle frame. Cochran supplied the knockout punch with six kills on seven attempts in the last set.

St. Andrews (4-6 overall) got 12 kills from Tessa Smith.

Columbia College 3, Barton College 1

BC cooled off on the defensive end in its second match falling to the Fighting Koalas by a score of 25-20, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-19. The Lady Bulldogs hit .086 compared to .149 by Columbia.

Cochran continued to swing a hot arm with a team-high 12 kills (.476). Ward and freshman Courtney Wiseman followed with seven and five kills, respectively. Bane supported the front line with 25 assists.

Barton had a strong match defensively. Grandy lifted up 15 digs, Ward scooped up 11 and Bane just missed a double-double with nine digs. Ward and Edwards also had six blocks each.

Columbia improved to 9-1 overall with three Fighting Koala players reaching the 10-plus kill plateau including a match-high 13 spikes by Caitlin Brickley. Caylee Antilley and Kara Anderson each added 10 kills.

The Fighting Koalas hit .452 to take the opening set but then hit a negative .111 in letting Barton tying the match. Columbia then jumped out 10-4 in both the third and fourth sets to close out play.
