ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-Sophomore midfielder Emily Futral scored Barton College's lone goal in a 5-1 loss to the host Saints in Friday night's finale to cap the day one of the Flagler College Kick-Off Classic to open up the 2013 season.

Sophomore Cassie Fernandez scored a first-half hat trick to help the Saints (1-0) to the season-opening victory. Fernandez' first collegiate hat trick featured tallies in the 10th, 25th and 37th minutes.

Futral prevented Fernandez from earning a natural hat trick (three straight goals in a single half) by netting her first of the season in the 27th minute. Futral's unassisted marker was her sixth collegiate goal. The Richlands, N.C., product led Barton in points as a rookie last season.

Fernandez put the host Saints, who went undefeated in non-conference play last year (5-0-1), ahead just 9:22 into play on a double assisted goal. Haley Powers and Evy Jacobs had the helpers that put the Saints in front for the final 80 minutes.

Taylor Algor scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a header at the 13:12 mark. Fernandez increased Flagler's cushion to 3-nil with her own header in the 25th minute. Powers picked up her second and third assists delivering the corner kick on both headers to finish with a three-point performance.

After Futral put the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 35-yard blast under the crossbar, Fernandez regained the three-goal lead for the Saints before halftime with an unassisted goal to complete the hat trick.

Flagler finished with a 20-6 shot surplus including a 10-1 edge in the second half.

Barton junior goalie Carson Moore kept the score manageable making five of her eight saves after the intermission but a 90th-minute goal by Gabby Torres assisted by Megan Poth pushed the final margin of victory to four goals.

Futral and Barton newcomers junior Jodi Barber and freshman Kathryn Smith all took two shots for the visitors.

Kaeta Choquette earned the win in goal for the Saints making three saves on four BC shots on frame.

Barton concludes play in the Sunshine State with a non-conference tilt against Palm Beach Atlantic University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Sailfish (0-0-1) played to a scoreless double overtime draw against Limestone College before the Barton/Flagler game Friday to begin the Flagler Tip-Off Classic.
