WILSON, N.C.-Barton College erupted for 27 hits in two games while giving up just six in sweeping Shaw University, 18-3 and 11-3, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jeffries Field. Both games were shortened to five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The wins left the Lady Bulldogs with a three-game winning streak and a season record of 10-24. The Bears fell to 14-24 on the year.
Liz Webb celebrated Senior Day by tossing a one-hitter in game one, walking a pair and striking out four in improving to 3-5 on the year. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, part of a 15-hit Bulldog attack. Kristin Moore and Sam Bass each had two hits and four RBI to pace Barton, while Taylor Barker added three hits and two RBI. Liz White had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored, while Emily Leagon drove in two runs and scored three times.
In game two, Jasmine Jones went 3-for-3, two of them doubles, and drove in two runs. Amanda Schatz and Rebecka Morgan each had two hits and two RBI, and Alex Baylis went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Hayley Baxley and Autumn Pittman (4-10) combined on a five-hitter, walking three and striking out five. The five hits for Shaw came from five different players.
Crystal Britton tripled to lead off the Barton first in game one, and White followed with an RBI double to right-center, setting the tone for the afternoon. The Bulldogs collected a total of six runs on six hits, including a two-run double by Moore.
Shaw responded with three runs in the top of the second. A pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Taylor Moore, who singled back up the middle to drive in a run. Two more runs scored on a dropped fly ball with two outs.
However, the Bears would not get another hit in the game off of Webb and only had one other runner reach base in the contest.
The Bulldogs got those three runs back in the bottom of the second on three hits, the big one another two-out, two-run single by Moore.
Barton continued the onslaught in the third inning, scoring seven times on five hits and a pair of Shaw errors, and tacked on two runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Bass.
In game two, Shaw took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Jamel Manley's fifth home run of the year, a one-out blast to left off Baxley.
Barton quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the first with four runs, three of them on RBI doubles by Morgan, Rachel Jordan and Jasmine Jones.
Jones added her second straight RBI double in the third inning, and the Bulldogs added a second run on an error to increase their lead to 6-1. An RBI double by Schatz highlighted a two-run third inning that moved the lead to 8-1.
