WILSON, N.C.-Freshman Ashley Batchelor scored a hat trick and classmate Emily Futral netted two goals to lead the Barton College women's soccer team to a dominating 8-1 non-conference win over visiting Chowan University on Wednesday evening at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs peppered the Hawks net with 35 shots including 20 on goal as first year head coach Kurt Bienias picked up win No. 1 at Barton in his home debut. BC evened its record at 1-1 on the early season and Chowan departed still winless at 0-3.
Sophomore Erica Jefferson provided the Hawks with an early lead on the squads only shot on goal just 7:09 into play. Jefferson scored her second goal of the season on an assist by Alyssa Anderson.
Futral sparked the Lady Bulldogs surge ahead with her first two collegiate goals in a five-minute flurry. The Richlands, N.C., product knotted the score in the 19th minute on a goal assisted by sophomore Breanna Briggs. Futral then deposited the game-winner in the 23rd minute after receiving a free-kick volley from senior Morgan Brush.
Batchelor pulled Barton away with a natural hat trick, scoring all three goals in an eight-minute span. Futral assisted Batchelor on her first tally in the 25th minute to complete a five-point performance. Batchelor completed her hat trick with two scores in exactly two minutes. Brush notched her second assist of the day on Batchelor's tally in the 31st minute while junior Taylor DeMartini was credited with the helper on her final goal in the 33rd minute.
Senior Sara Treadwell finished off the Lady Bulldogs first half scoring by beating a Chowan defender in the 34th minute and confidently drilling the ball into the back of the net to give Barton a 6-1 advantage at the intermission.
A pair of quick goals by junior Taylor Parrish in the 65th minute and Briggs in the 67th minute extended the Bulldogs final margin of victory to seven.
Sophomore Carson Moore was awarded the win in goal for Barton after starting and playing the first 62 minutes while only facing one shot. Freshmen reserves Victoria Tully and Kelsey Rothwell were untested after each playing over 10 minutes between the pipes.
The Royal blue and White finished with a 35-2 shot surplus and 5-1 edge on corner kicks. Chowan goalie Jennifer Harvell made 12 saves.
Barton next visits Southeast Region foe Catawba College for a Noon showdown in Salisbury, N.C., on Saturday.
