BRISTOL, Tenn.-Freshman Emily Futral finished off a cross by senior Adrianna Jimenez in the 12th minute for the only goal of Saturday's Conference Carolinas women's soccer match at Park Field to lead Barton College to the 1-0 win at King College.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carson Moore made 10 saves to preserve the Lady Bulldogs second straight shutout in conference play as Barton improved to 3-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the league.
"Carson [Moore] was off the hook," expressed Barton first year head coach Kurt Bienias. "I don't have statistics yet but she made at least four high quality saves that had fans of both teams on their feet. Simply put she wasn't to be denied her shutout today… just an unbelievable performance."
The Tornado finished with a 24-10 shot advantage but was unable to sneak anything past Moore and the Bulldogs defense. King was deprived of a third consecutive win slipping to .500 at 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Barton survived the opening 10 minutes that included a pair of dangerous shots by junior Jamie Grigsby, who ripped her first attempt off the crossbar and then was stopped on her second strike by Moore.
Futral netted the game-winner on the Lady Bulldogs first shot of the overcast afternoon. Jimenez set up the play with a volley into the box that Futrel was able to punch inside the left goalpost.
Futral moved into a three-way tie for the team lead with three goals on the season with junior Taylor Parrish and freshman Ashley Batchelor. The Richlands, N.C., product does lead Barton with 10 points (has a team-best four assists).
King held an 11-5 shot edge in the first half but Moore made a couple highlight reel saves. Barton's last four shots of the first half were off target. The Tornado kept the pressure by taking a surplus of shot, 13-5, in the second half without success. Freshman Rachel Thorpe launched eight total shots including five on frame but Moore was up to the task all five times.
Moore and the Lady Bulldogs defense have not surrendered a goal to a league opponent in its last 208 minutes of game time.
Barton next travels to Hartsville, S.C., for a Conference Carolinas clash at Coker College on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
