WILSON, N.C.-Junior Taylor Parrish scored Barton College's lone goal in a 5-1 setback to No. 8 NSCAA/Continental Tire Southeast Region ranked University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Monday afternoon at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Braves outshot the Lady Bulldogs 26-9; including 19-7 on goal but 14 combined saves by Barton goalkeepers Carson Moore, Victoria Tully and Kelsey Rothwell kept the score in check.
UNC Pembroke snapped a two-game skid to improve to 4-2-1. Barton dipped to 2-5-0.
Ashley Anctil started the scoring for UNCP just 8:41 into play when she was able to one-time a corner kick taken by Amalia Arvidsson. A tally by freshman Julia Nytorp in the 35th minute doubled up the Braves lead to 2-0 before halftime. Nytorp finished off a high cross by junior Alisia Gustafson.
UNC Pembroke outshot Barton 13-3 in the first half and had a couple great chances including a long rip off the boot of Fanny Forsman in the 17th minute that bounced off the crossbar.
Moore kept the Bulldogs in the game with six saves in the opening 45 minutes. The Lady Bulldogs best chance in the opening frame came in the 26th minute when Parrish dribbled in from the right wing and took a low shot that just trickled wide of the left post.
Sherrie Gessin increased the visitors lead to 3-0 early in the second half when she knocked in a corner kick by Anctil in the 50th minute.
Parrish broke up the shutout bid just 11 seconds after Gessin's tally, when she took control of the opening possession after the whistle and lifted a long shot from just outside the center circle over the Braves defense and goalie and into the back of the net.
Parrish took four of Barton's nine shots. The Smithfield, N.C., product has scored in two consecutive games and is tied for the Lady Bulldogs team lead with three goals on the season.
UNCP scored two more times in the second half to pull out the four-goal victory. Arvidsson netted her team-leading fifth goal in the 56th minute on a double assist by Nytorp and Andrea Collen. Nytorp netted her second goal of the day in the 62nd minute on another helper by Collen.
Nytorp finished with a seven point performance while Arvidsson and Anctil each totaled four points.
Barton fired six of its nine shots in the second half. Senior Adrianna Jimenez had a couple good looks including a breakaway chance in the 69th minute that was saved. Senior Morgan Brush and Nicole Smith also took attempts on frame that were denied.
Rothwell and Tully split time in the second half protecting the Barton's net with each rookie making four saves including several diving stops.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs make their first trip to Bristol, Tenn., for a 2 p.m., encounter with King College.
