WILSON, N.C.-The University of North Carolina at Pembroke women's soccer team scored 13 goals on 43 total shot attempts en route to a 13-0 Southeast Region victory over host Barton College in the 2011 season opener for both programs on Thursday afternoon at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Braves (1-0), who made it to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, had seven goal scorers. Sophomore Frankie Berscak (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) paced UNCP with a hat trick off the bench.
A youthful Lady Bulldogs squad that started four freshman were held to just a pair of second-half shots off the foot of junior Morgan Brush (Princeton, N.C.). Freshman starting goalkeeper Carson Moore (Greenville, N.C.) was busy in her collegiate debut, facing 43 shots and making 12 saves on 25 attempts on frame.
Barton will have nine days to prepare for its Conference Carolinas opener at league newcomer North Greenville University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
A quartet of Braves scored two goals including the first two tallies of the game by senior Rebecca Womack (Thomasville, N.C.) in a 21 second span in the 11th minute. Junior Andrea Collen (Umea, Sweden), junior Brittany Padilla (Jacksonville, N.C.) and freshman Amalia Arvidsson (Boras, Sweden) all scored twice.
Collen and Padilla both chipped in two assists for six-point performances as UNCP recorded assists on nine of its 13 goals. The Braves held a 10-1 corner kick advantage.
UNCP posted 14 shutouts last year and continued its tradition of strong defense by holding Barton to just two second-half shots as starting sophomore goalkeeper Britney Bennett (Seminole, Fla.) and freshman reserve Janae Aiken (San Antonio, Texas) combined for the clean slate. Bennett, who is the reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, did not face a shot in 67 minutes of work while Aiken made the only save needed to preserve the shutout in the final 10 minutes on a long attempt by Brush.
