BC fastpitch ends season at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.-Sophomore utility player Elizabeth Webb (Wilson, N.C.) drove in three Barton runs but host Mount Olive College scored 18 runs on 21 hits en route to an 8-4 and 10-1 Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Nancy C. Cassell Field.

The Lady Bulldogs concluded the 2011 season with a 19-27 overall record and a 5-13 ledger in league play. The 19 wins are the most since BC won 20 games in 2001.

Senior Jessica McFadden (Wilmington, N.C.) drew a walk and stole second in her last collegiate plate appearance. McFadden had a base hit in both games to finish the season batting a conference-best .484. McFadden averaged one run and one stolen base per game in her senior season with 44 runs and 44 stolen bases in 44 games.

McFadden finished her four-year tenure in a Royal Blue and White uniform batting .425 with 136 total runs and 127 total steals.

Seniors Megan Griffin (Wilson, N.C.) and Cassie Blackmon (Henderson, N.C.) also started the final game of their undergraduate careers.

GAME ONE: Mount Olive 8, Barton 4

Barton rallied from a three-run deficit with a three runs in the fifth but Mount Olive fought back with four runs in the sixth to pull out an 8-4 victory in the opener.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-up lead in the top of the first as McFadden led off the game with a bunt single and later scored on a base hit by Webb. Mount Olive jumped ahead with two unearned runs in the home half before scoring two more runs in the fourth to take its 4-1 edge.

A two-run single by Webb followed by a junior Rebecka Morgan (Huntingtown, Md.) single that plated Webb evened the score at 4-up in the fifth. Webb finished the game going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Mount Olive sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth, which featured four singles and a double.

Freshman Autumn Pittman (Pikeville, N.C.) – coming off her first complete-game shutout – took the loss in three innings of relief work.

GAME TWO: Mount Olive 10, Barton 1

Junior Robbin Kennedy (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a walk-off, three-run homer off the left field light pole in the bottom of the fifth as the Trojans completed the doubleheader sweep with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap. Mount Olive (22-25, 10-8) moved into a three-way tie for third place in the league standings after taking both ends of the twin bill.

Barton was held to just four hits. Herrin's double down the left field line in the fourth was the Bulldogs lone extra base hit on the day. A leadoff bunt single by Blackmon in the fifth led to BC's only run. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, junior Kendall Street (Bertie, N.C.) drove in Blackmon with a single to left.

Mount Olive started its scoring with five runs in the second before pulling away with one run in the third and four more in the fifth. The Trojans totaled 12 hits.
