LAURINBURG, N.C.-Freshman right fielder Jasmine Jones (Deep Run, N.C.) drilled her first collegiate home run, a grand slam, to highlight Barton College's 10-2 and 2-1 Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon.
Barton picked up its first league wins of the season, improving to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Lady Knights finish the day with 2-13 overall and 0-6 league ledgers.
Sophomore utility player Elizabeth Webb (Wilson, N.C.) had a big afternoon going 4-for-5 with two walks, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI. Webb also tossed the final three innings of the nightcap for her first save of the season.
Senior center fielder Jessica McFadden (Wilmington, N.C.) had a team-high five hits for BC.
GAME ONE: Barton 10, St. Andrews 2 (5 innings)
The first two batters of the game scored and Barton never looked back coasting to a 10-2 win in the opener. The Bulldogs recorded a pair of runs in both the first and second innings before exploding for six runs in the fifth. Barton tallied nine singles before Jones crushed her long ball.
McFadden led off the contest with an infield hit and Webb followed with a single into the right field gap. Sophomore catcher Rebecka Morgan (Huntingtown, Md.) and junior shortstop Autumn Herrin (Pasadena, Md.) then drove in McFadden and Webb with ground balls.
Barton doubled up its lead in the second with two more runs that featured an RBI-single by McFadden, who finished the game going 3-for-4.
In the fifth, BC loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Junior Stacy Wade (Snow Hill, N.C.) knocked in the first run with a single before classmate Emily Jordan (Goldsboro, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk. Jones capped the surge with her grand slam over the left field fence.
Junior starter Kendall Street (Bertie, N.C.) held SAPC to just one earned run over five innings in the winning effort. Street (2-2) fanned seven Knights and only allowed four hits and one walk.
GAME TWO: Barton 2, St. Andrews 1
In a much closer second game, Barton took advantage of five St. Andrews errors to score a pair of unearned runs before claiming the 2-1 finale.
A solo home run by freshman Tiffany Harris (Columbia, S.C.) to lead off the bottom of the second gave the host Knights an early one run advantage before the Bulldogs rallied.
With the bases full in the top of the third, freshman Autumn Pittman (Pikeville, N.C.) drew a base on balls that evened the score. An single by Webb in the fourth scored junior Michole Brown (Wilson, N.C.) for the go-ahead run.
Webb paced the Bulldogs going 3-for-4 with a stolen base. McFadden added two hits including a double to start the game.
Jordan (3-4) picked up the win on the rubber, allowing a lone run over four innings. Webb tossed three innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts for her first save. Webb made the seventh inning stressful loading the bases by giving up a leadoff single and later plunking two batters but she escaped the two-out jam with a game-ending popup.
