PEMBROKE, N.C.-The Barton College softball team rode the arm of junior Kendall Street in to a 2-1 game one victory before falling 5-0 to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in game two at LRA Field Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs depart with a 3-7 record after playing in their first true doubleheader of the season (BC opened up its season with eight straight neutral site tournament games). The Braves have split five of six twin bills and own a 7-5 overall ledger.
Barton begins Conference Carolinas play in its home opener on Sunday when the Lady Bulldogs host Pfeiffer University. The twin bill is slated to start at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE: Barton 2, UNCP 1
Junior left fielder Michole Brown (Wilson, N.C.) was involved in both of Barton's scoring plays and classmate Kendall Street (Bertie, N.C.) tossed a complete game in the opener as the Lady Bulldogs squeaked out a 2-1 win.
Brown drove in the first run with an RBI-single in the second and later tagged up and scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a sophomore Rebecka Morgan (Huntingtown, Md.) sacrifice fly. Brown was 2-for-3.
Barton was held to just six hits but three of them came consecutively in the second off the bats of juniors Autumn Herrin (Pasadena, Md.), Krystin Moore (Garner, N.C.), and Brown.
Street (1-2) picked up her first win of the season allowing just one run in the fifth on two infield singles. Street fanned eight Braves in the complete-game performance. UNCP had base runners in scoring position in each of the last five innings but Street came up with clutch outs each time.
GAME TWO: UNCP 5, Barton 0
UNC Pembroke kept Barton off the scoreboard and took advantage of four Bulldogs errors to salvage the nightcap by a 5-0 final score.
Sophomore starter Starr Gilley (Graham, N.C.) and freshman Natalie Klemann (Apex, N.C.) combined for the shutout. Gilley (4-1), who started the first game as well, picked up the win going five strong innings allowing four hits and striking out five.
Barton junior Emily Jordan (Goldsboro, N.C.) went the distance. Jordan (1-3) did not allow an earned and all seven of the UNCP's hits were singles but she took the loss because of the errors. The southpaw registered four strikeouts.
Sophomore Elizabeth Webb (Wilson, N.C.) produced two of the Bulldogs five hits including Barton's lone extra base hit, a double down the right field line in the fourth.
UNCP got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth and pulled away with three more unearned in the fifth.
